Jacob takes on the Big Blue....

Jacob is huge into sports, hockey, t-ball and golf -- oh and of course, fire trucks. Like any mother, I'd like him to love the things I do too.  Gardening, going for walks, cooking and sailing -- just to name a few.  This past Sunday I took him out sailing.  Being out on the boat, leaving everything behind, and allowing myself to be free and enjoy my surroundings is what I live for in the winter.  And having my little side-kick next to me makes it that much more special.
If any of you have spent any amount of time with a toddler you know that you can't tell them things they are going to do much more then 5 minutes before you actually go.  Here's why.... Is it time to go yet?  Can we go now? Are we going sailing?  Am I your crew?  Do you own the boat?  Can we go now?  We were originally going to stay home and do some fun stuff.  I got the call that we were actually going to go out so I had a 5 minute conversation in my head (yes this happens often) and decided to tell him after I was already dressed that we were going to go.  Boy was he excited!!  After our usual breakfast at the Muffin Shop we headed down to the Novi, which Jacob got to drive to the big boat!

He's been on the boat before but this was comical.  Watching an already clumsy 4 year old try and understand why the floor beneath him was rocking was hilarious. Especially where it used to be on dock and now is at the mouth of the harbor, unprotected.  The kid has more bruises on his legs then normal.  Perhaps I should have wrapped him in bubble wrap.... oh wait.... he had his life jacket on. He wanted to know what everything was, but stuck with the grinders.... just like his mama.  He did his first spin on the drums, of course at a low speed for fear of flinging him off.
Overall, the sail went great.  He made friends with everyone on the boat and even had his favorites.  He knows the "rules" of the boat and listens to everyone.  He even took a little nap! Both of us were in bed at 7:30pm and asleep by 7:35pm.  It's a long day to begin with but toss in a 4 year old and you've got yourself an EXTRA long day.  I wouldn't change it if I could.  Absolutely perfect.

A big thank you to the rest of the crew and the guests who put up with his questions and typical toddler shenanigans.  I really appreciate it!

uh oh paleo...

This could either be a great decision or it could be my worst idea yet.  This coming from the bread loving, yogurt eating, cream in my coffee person . . . I'm not so sure I can handle this.  Welp, we have to go grocery shopping and I figure now is as good time as any.  Glad I had steak tips and Cesar salad for dinner.  I'm now going to consume a loaf of bread and the gallon of milk in my fridge.  Doesn't help that I have a toddler and a husband who drink/eat everything you're not supposed to for Paleo.  Thanks Pam Rehal for logging everything you eat and giving me an added push in the right direction.  I figure if I go through your stuff and pick the things I like to eat or sound good, the first two weeks I might not eat my fist from starvation.  Once again, thanks pinterest for being addictive and giving me lots of yummy recipes, oh and paleOMG. My brother-in-law and his wife follow this too and both look fantastic.
Word of the day (for the moment...) WILLPOWER!
The unwavering strength of will to carry out one's wishes...
(just in case y'all were wondering what the definition was)
(Cont'd from yesterday 5/18) Today I made the decision to go Paleo.  I finished my last 2 cups of coffee with half & half in it and there was no other food in the house.  We went to T-Ball which is hilarious and then went grocery shopping after.  That was by far THE HARDEST grocery shopping trip EVER!  Walking through a grocery store when your hungry is never a good idea but when you just start doing Paleo it's like heart wrenching... I actually had tears in my eyes as I picked up Silk Almond Milk with Vanilla flavor.  I SO wanted to pick up fat free skim milk.... But I stuck with it.  All through the store, Todd said you can have this and I said NO  I can't.  Through the entire store I must have said NO like 20 times.  So while I had the child seat section of the basket carrige filled with fruit, salad, eggs and everything else, he and Jacob were chucking chicken fingers, pizza, yogurts, milk and everything short of the kitchen sink in the cart... :(

SO for food today I had :
Breakfast:  2 cups of coffee with truvia and 1/2 & 1/2.
Snack:  Banana

Lunch: Can of tuna with a little yellow mustard salt & pepper to taste. Two celery sticks with forty spices humus. (yum!)

Snack:  Apple, dried banana's and some fresh ham.

Dinner:  Pork Chops with honey, and lemon pepper seasoning, hard boiled egg and salad with home made dressing.

I can safely say that I finished my first paleo day.... with the exception of finishing my half and half.  I have had a head ache all day but I think it might be from the sugar? If that makes sense....  I might log this one as a practice day.  Tomorrow I need to eat a little more at meal time and have better snacks.

Tonight's agenda :  Map my run for tomorrow, look up some yoga to teach myself and then more Paleo planning! (recipe's for everything!)

WIP Wednesday :)

(Work In Progress) Wednesday.

More rain.... It has been such a beautiful spring and we've been outside so much that my projects have been piling up.  Well with all this rain, I've tackled some of them!  Some I can just tell you the tiniest amount about because there surprises and the others I'm going to post pictures of!  Yahoo!

I'm beginning to make this Puff Quilt from @HoneyBearLane.  I'm sure it's not going to be nearly as beautiful as her quilts, but everyone has to start somewhere!  I love all the bright colors and it could work for either a boy or a girl!

The next project is made from all my scraps from other projects.  Patterns I loved and wanted to do something to include them all.  So I searched... and searched... and searched... And I found it!  The perfect quilt to make with scraps!  This blogger posted it over three years ago!  I'm in love.  Here are the scraps I'm going to use and some got cut out.  Bummer!

Awesome!  Here's the link to the pictre and the blog that I found it on!   Next Wednesday I'll be posting more pictures of it!

The other three projects I'm working on are to be kept a secret!  One is for a very dear friend who is expecting her first child in August!  Baby Luck I can't wait to meet you!  Any the other two are for the little chickies I take care of in the afternoon.  I'll post pictures in another WIP Wednesday after they are done and passed on!

Untill then, that's all for now!

(Who doesn't like a nice warm tub after a wet day!)

On The Menu

First, a big shout out to Pinterest, Budgetsavvydiva.com,  and Allrecipies.com for kicking my butt into gear to try new recipies...

How many of you have your 'go-to' recipies that you always cook and are comfortable making? Yea -- that's me! To be honest with you (sorry honey) I'm so sick of the same ol' chicken -- so I'm spicing it up a bit!  Grilled chicken, baked chicken, pan fried chicken. UGH!  He's always up my rear end about cooking fish, so, we bought fish, expensive fish.  I found a recipe and he better like it! I found some new chicken recipes that I can't wait to try and a croc pot mac and cheese which I'm so excited to make today because its rainy and gross! Of course it's not healthy and not up to snuff with the mr. but ya know what?!  I want it!

On the menu this week is :

Miso Salmon

Grilled Chicken Ceasar Tenders

Croc Pot Mac & Cheese

Honey Chicken Kabobs
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/yummy-honey-chicken-kabobs/detail.aspx

(Yes, I realize that it's only 4 meals, but Todd's gone 1 night and I'm sure we'll figure the rest out -- these were just new recipes I wanted to try.  Going to try and do at least 2-3 new ones a week)

Meal Planning? I'm not sure how I feel about it.  I have a friend who did it, not sure if she still does, but with the fire house life sometimes it's nice having one less thing to worry about. Sometimes I just like to be spontaneous.  So I pledge to eat healthier and plan meals so we don't resort to the same old same old boring recipes.  And with the nice weather already being here, I already notice a trend during the week and it begins with grill.  Grilled chicken, kielbasa, hot dogs and burgers.  We got into a routine with it and we can still do it, just got to spice it up a bit.

Well, now that I'm starving, I'm going to go make my boring peanut butter & jelly sandwich...

Happy Sunday All :)

Barking Up The Right Tree!

While reading a friends Paleo blog (are you nuts?! I love bread too much! Good for you), I stumbled upon one with home made dog collars and leashes. With my 'Sail Creations' inspired mind and some pretty cool fabrics in mind, a lot of doggie friends.... Watch out world! Meri has another idea!

My parents always had nice collars for the pups and they all seemed to match their personality. Then my mother started calling them clothes. And talking to the dogs saying, where's your clothes!

So, why not make nautical themed (others too!) collars, leashes and maybe even dog beds! Ok - kitty beds too :)

Someone please tell me if I'm going nuts or if this ones for the dogs!

A Fathers Love

The death of a great man, Howie Doliber, has inspired this post...

Don't get me wrong, ones relationship with their mother is untouchable.  She is the disciplinary one, the outline of life, a teacher, a role model, and most of all your mother.  She gave birth to you and grew you from day one inside.  She helps shape you as a person and teaches you right from wrong.  But there is someone else, almost the unsung hero.

Dad.

A few days ago, a wife and four wonderful children lost their father.  They stood strong at the wake as the back bone for their Mother.  Each of them had a different story as we passed and expressed our condolences.  But as I looked at all of the pictures through-out the funeral home I realized that the relationship, the bond, the love between a Father and his child is so great, powerful, and unspoken.

As I spoke to my Dad today, it came to my mind that I never tell him how much I love him. One day he will be gone and I will have to stand there and be strong for my Mom.  Yes, I will always kiss my mother goodbye, call her on the phone, or say I love you -- that will always be.  No matter the conversation, argument, or just random conversation.  But with Dad -- it's like we have osmosis. It's unspoken but the love is so great.

We share a love of Football, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffett -- although we've BOTH never been to a concert, Baseball, sailing, family, and many more.  There have been the occasional time where I've done something stupid and with out saying a word, he would ask me to do something around the house and I knew automatically that I was being punished.  I will call and just by hearing my voice he'll know something is wrong or I'm in a great mood.  We both know by the raise in an eyebrow to get the heck out of the kitchen.  He helps me when I need things and I help him.  He has taught me the skills in life that I will need someday when we own a house.  Yes -- I know how to change a light bulb and even replace the kitchen floor.  He has pushed me in a way to grow as a person that I will never be able to repay. When we stood in the room before my wedding and he said, 'I don't want to see you cry, don't look at me and we'll make it down the isle together' - that's love.   It's a relationship I am beginning to understand.  It's the relationship that I see now with Todd & Jacob.  It's indescribable.

In life we all have different roles.  If you are a parent then you get it.  If you are an expectant parent, make sure you stop and look at the things developing around you.  If you have lost a parent, stop, look to the sky and say, 'I love you Mom/Dad.

You don't know what you've got till it's gone.

That being said.  Dad, I love you.  Thank you for all that you've taught me.  Thank you for helping Mom shape me into the person that I am today.  Thank you for being there when I need you.  Although I may not give you lots of hugs or kiss you good-bye, you will always be my Dad and I'm glad to have you.  You mean the world to me and I wouldn't have it any other way.

So we'll continue touching index fingers and I'll know what you really mean.

What if...

Now that we're adjusted to fire house life I want to get to know more of the wives and grow my circle of friends.  But I feel like being in a group (like the guys) you really just stick with the group and that's it, accept for holiday gatherings and such.  I want to squish the clicky side of it and grow a wonderful group of friends!

But would they be receptive? I'm not just talking Marblehead, I'm thinking Marblehead, Salem, Lynn, Beverly, Danvers -- the entire North Shore!

My neighbor(s) (whom I love dearly) had his Mother over and she was commenting on how crafty I was and such (Thank you!).  We got into conversation about this, I think.  We talked about a lot yesterday! What if I started a group for 'North Shore Fire Wives'?  Our husbands, boyfriends, fiance's risk their lives day in and day out for the people of their towns.  Sometimes the wives get forgotten about.  Especially if we have children.

When my husband graduated MFA in December, there was a huge fire in Peabody and a firefighter died.  While my husband got to go to the funeral as a brother to this fellow fireman, I was at home watching the funeral, and trying to explain to my son (whose 4, keep in mind...) what was happening.  Jacob knows that Daddy goes to work to keep people safe, but he doesn't understand the danger behind it.  >this is why I don't have a scanner!<  The amount of love and support that was there for this family was unreal.  It was SO moving.  It was wonderful to see so many people get together for ONE person.  I heard the funeral for the Worcester 6 was amazing. I'm proud to be a part of such a large family.

Maybe if we created a support group for one another -- it would be a good thing!

I know that I'm new in this whole 'Fire Wife' adventure, but sometimes I don't understand everything that goes on.  Luckily I'm part of a wonderful group of wives, mothers, and friends who have welcomed me with open arms.  Our kids are all friends, we plan nights to get together and have dinner, movie's and play.  Sometimes things don't get brought home from the guys and we talk about them between the ladies and I now understand more.

That being said... I'm going to do it! Tell your friends!
